Center to our mission is education for learners of all ages. TreePeople takes complex environmental topics and leads with fun, creativity and inclusivity as we connect millions to trees, plants, water, air and soil. The Natural Connections programs will connect thousands of community members and young people from underserved communities to the beauty, wonder and awe of our natural world. The program centers on green spaces within communities and also farther away natural open space lands. The program centers awe inspiring activities and hands on learning while also centering cultural relevance and connecting to issues that our communities care most about.

We seek an energetic, passionate, highly-organized Senior Manager of Outdoor Access to grow our outdoor access programming through our flagship Natural Connections program.  This role will be a key part of TreePeople’s environmental education team by partnering with the Director of Education and Community and the Senior Manager of Generation Earth to develop new strategies, seek out new funding opportunities, and support and grow current programs. This position will oversee five programs under outdoor access: Eco-tour program and four Natural Connections programs in Huntington Park, San Fernando, South Bay and Compton.

Duties Include:

·      Manage and support the environmental education (EE) team to execute the vision, goals and deliverables of our current outdoor access programs.

·      Develop innovative, creative and inspiring educational programming that ties directly to the communities we serve.

·      Develop community relationships to foster activities and experiences that relate to the different programs.

·    Build and implement a strong outreach plan to reach as many schools and community members centered in our targeted programming regions. 

·      Work with the Director of Education and Community to develop strategic objectives that are centered around growing TreePeople’s outdoor access program work. 

·      Build partnerships that strengthen TreePeople’s goals and map to targeted regions identified.

·      Work with the Director of Education and Organizing to identify funding sources for the department and actively fundraise via cultivation of donors, grant writing, etc.

·      Assist with updating our programs and toolkits to inspire and engage people while also aligning to relevant education standards.

·      Assist with assessing our programs to ensure they intentionally integrate equity, inclusion and cultural relevancy. 

·      Create reports and communicate with our funders on various deliverables that are being met via our grants.

·      Attend high-level meetings with the Director of Education and Organizing that help to advance the goals of the outdoor access program work and TreePeople as a whole.

·      Represent TreePeople in the community.

·   Other duties as assigned.

Desired Skills/Requirements:

  • Experience developing educational programs that are innovative and creative.
  • Recent, proven experience working with schools and community members, ideally on environmental projects.
  • Community-oriented individual who is adept at mobilizing and prioritizing the needs of a community. 
  • Possess an understanding of equity, inclusion and cultural relevancy.
  • Commitment to improving the environment through education. Some background in educational theory and methodology. Some background in the Next Generation Science Standards is a plus.
  • An understanding of ecological systems and awareness of current environmental including the impacts of urban development and green solutions. 
  • The ability and willingness to visit school sites across L.A. County and communicate with school district personnel, administrators, educators, and youth via telephone, email and fax.
  • Proven project management skills such as accountability, time management, prioritizing tasks, and meeting high-pressure deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team.
  • Experience with fundraising and writing grants.
  • Must be able to work well both independently and on a team. 
  • Strong communication skills that include professional writing, public speaking, and intra-personal communication. 
  • High computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, and other internet-based programs.
  • Spanish fluency is a plus.
  • Valid California Driver License and reliable transportation is mandatory.
  • While performing the duties of this job, this position requires standing (mostly as a presenter), walking, driving, as well as the ability to lift 15 pounds.
