TreePeople is an environmental nonprofit organization that mobilizes individuals, families, communities, philanthropists, and public agencies to work together to create green, resilient communities by providing education on the benefits of planting trees, capturing the rainwater, greening schools, and providing fun environmental educational activities. TreePeople unites with communities to grow a greener, shadier and more water-secure region at homes, neighborhoods, schools and in the local mountains. 

TreePeople seeks a full-time, bilingual (Spanish/English), experienced Senior Community Organizer to lead our South and Southeast Los Angeles team of community organizers in a movement toward environmental equity. This position will lead an ambitious outreach and engagement program that addresses climate change issues in historically underserved communities. TreePeople has planted thousands of shade trees with the help of volunteers in an effort to mitigate the effects of climate change and address issues of extreme heat and poor air quality. The Senior Community Organizer will participate in developing and implementing research based, creative, and lasting strategies that will inspire communities to support a functioning urban forest by participating in local volunteer tree planting and care events, and watering newly planted trees on their own.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with community-based organizations, public agencies, community members, and stakeholders and develop an understanding of the community’s culture and needs.
  • Assist in setting community outreach and engagement strategies and goals for achieving the TreePeople mission statement.    
  • Lead the organizing team in introducing themselves to communities in a collaborative way.
  • Identify key community stakeholders in TreePeople’s project areas to leverage our work, and establish and maintain relationships in the community.
  • Ensure the organizing team meets targeted outreach and engagement goals, and project objectives within a reasonable timeframe.     
  • Serve as a community liaison by participating and representing TreePeople at meetings, public forums, volunteer events, and fundraisers. 
  • Coordinate content and logistics for public events and large-scale mobilization.
  • Connect organizing work with research, public policy, and communications designed campaigns.
  • Ensure that tabling and bilingual outreach materials are updated with the most current version prior to an event.     
  • Communicate directly with TreePeople’s Marketing and Communications department to coordinate event photography, social media posts, branding, outreach materials, and press releases.     
  • Supervise community organizing staff.
  • Demonstrate TreePeople’s tree planting, tree care, and community engagement model.
  • Support colleagues at volunteer events, including event preparation, volunteer supervision, and event clean up.

Position Requirements

  • Community-oriented individual that is proficient in the skills required to mobilize people into action.  
  • Cultural sensitivity, particularly for the underserved communities of South and Southeast Los Angeles. 
  • Competency in social and environmental equity and inclusion. 
  • Strong leadership, team-building and problem-solving skills. 
  • Experience in project management skills and organizing strategy.
  • Inspiring and engaging public speaking and interpersonal skills. 
  • Detail oriented skills in logistics and planning.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills: listening, negotiating, public speaking, and writing. 
  • Passionate about local climate resilience, and environmental issues impacting underserved communities. 
  • Bilingual English/Spanish. 
  • Driver’s license and proof of insurance required. 
  • Proof of Covid-19 vaccination required.
  • Able to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Able to stand and walk for long periods.
  • Able to work outside for hours at a time during tree planting events, tree care events, and canvassing.
  • Able to dig holes, lift heavy equipment and planting materials, including 15-gallon shade trees, 5-gallon water buckets, and tools.
