Overview

Part-time Political Research Associate

20 hours a week

Location: Denver or Los Angeles preferred; will also consider top candidates to work remotely

The Public Interest Network is hiring a part-time Political Research Associate. If you’re an advocate for social change, one of the most powerful tools in your toolbox is a robust list of people — including decision makers, connectors, influencers and other thought leaders — who can help you win your campaign. The Political Research Associate will update, add to and code the list of political supporters for our network of environmental and public interest organizations.

Key Responsibilities

As the Political Research Associate, you will use your research and analytical skills to provide support for our Political Department and for organizations across The Public Interest Network. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Adding top contacts to our lists in each of the 50 states
  • Enhancing current records with:
    • Updated contact information
    • Information on our relationship
    • Coding to make our list management and segmentation more efficient, including coding by issue area of interest
  • Designing, producing and analyzing reports to inform and enhance our outreach and organizing strategies, as well as evaluate our progress in increasing our connections to these important contacts
  • Other projects as assigned

Job Qualifications

We are looking for a skilled candidate with a demonstrated commitment to social change, an appreciation of the importance of organizing, and a love of keeping track of the details. We’re also looking for team players, who are more motivated by the success of the movement than by individual achievement.

Additionally, top candidates will:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree
  • Be a curious, creative and tenacious researcher. The best candidate is genuinely interested in learning about the people being tracked in the database.
  • Enjoy paying outstanding attention to detail in collecting the data and entering it in the database.
  • Have solid computer, Google Workspace and database skills and be able to learn quickly.
  • Not be afraid to pick up the phone to get information.
  • Have strong writing and presentation skills.
  • Be highly organized and deadline-driven.
  • Be flexible, embrace new challenges, and have a strong work ethic.
  • Be able to work independently, as well as take direction
  • Be able to work up to 20 hours per week, on average.

Compensation and Benefits:

The target hourly compensation range for this position is $15-$20 an hour and depends on relevant experience, education, and location. Our benefits package for part time employees includes paid sick time as required by state and local law (1 hour of sick time per 30 – 40 working hours, depending on location) and paid time off as required by state and local law. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.

Why work with The Public Interest Network? Check out ten reasons: https://publicinterestnetwork.org/why-work-with-us/

About the Public Interest Network

The Public Interest Network operates and supports more than a dozen organizations – including PIRG, Environment America and their state affiliates – committed to a shared vision of a better world and a strategic approach to change.

Our work focuses on the problems that arise from America’s single-minded pursuit of endless economic growth: We’re still burning fossil fuels even though it’s changing the climate. We keep giving antibiotics to healthy livestock, even though it leads to “superbugs” that are antibiotic-resistant. We use plastic products for a few minutes only to throw them away so they pollute the oceans for centuries.

And our approach is unique: We focus on the big picture, but are relentlessly pragmatic and prioritize making a difference in people’s lives over making a statement. We work with everybody to make change happen, political ideology aside, championing good ideas wherever they come from. And we are serious about the work – we set clear goals, benchmarks and systems to measure our progress, and hold ourselves accountable to making change now and building for the future.

This unique approach gives our staff an opportunity to make a concrete difference for the environment and the public interest – just as hundreds of dedicated staff have done over our 50 year history. If you want to add to this change-making legacy; if you have the passion and the drive that it takes; if you’re looking for a mission, not just a job – then let’s talk.
