Come join The Crucible as our Director of Studio Operations & Facilities for the opportunity to use your arts education and facilities management experience in service to a fantastic arts education nonprofit located in West Oakland!

The Director of Studio Operations and Facilities oversees this crucial department and directly manages a full-time Safety Manager, Facilities Coordinator and a team of Studio Operations Technicians. They are responsible for helping to supervise interns, seasonal apprentices, contractors, and volunteers for site-related projects. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Studio Operations and Facilities is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of staff, faculty, students, and community when in and around the facility. 

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • At least four (4) years of relevant work experience with managing an active art school department or departments, studio or labs.
  • At least three (3) years of experience managing at least three (3) entry and mid-level direct reports
  • Cal/OSHA 30-Hour Training for General Industry and Forklift Certification or willingness to acquire within thirty (30) days.
  • Experience working with federal, state and local regulatory agencies to ensure compliance and obtain required permits for operation. 
  • Experience with industrial arts fabrication equipment and studio and safety requirements. 
  • Strong organizational skills; comfort with digital tools and research. 
  • Self-motivation and adaptability. 
  • Ability to prioritize workload efficiently and manage multiple projects. 
  • Can work effectively under pressure, react quickly, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong personal integrity, maturity, and credibility. 
  • Experience with Google Drive tools, spreadsheets, and presentations. 
  • Proficient with MS-Office (e.g., Word, PPT), Google Workspace tools (e.g., Doc, Sheets, Slides), and Zoom. Willing and able to learn new software.
  • Valid California Driver’s License with an insurable driving record.
  • Ability to complete California DOJ LiveScan for youth-serving organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university or other relevant training or applicable experiences.
  • Previous leadership experience in a nonprofit organization, preferably in education, arts or social service organization.

Physical Requirements

This position is primarily located in an office and warehouse environment. Able to perform the following duties with or without accommodation:

  • Stand, sit, kneel, walk, bend, and perform repetitive motions for the duration of an eight (8) hour shift.
  • Able to operate standard office equipment including computers, keyboard, phones, POS machines, and printers.
  • Traverse safely throughout the entirety of the facility including climbing stairs.
  • Safely lift, move, and transport items weighing up to 35 lbs. in and out of vehicles.
  • Communicate in a clear speaking voice in person, over the phone and during video conferences.
  • Complete COVID-19 primary vaccination series and most recent vaccination booster available.
