Overview

The Mayfair Coordinator develops strong organizing leadership in the predominantly immigrant Mayfair community; facilitates solution-based discussions around multi-generational challenges and supports the development of community strategies to support a thriving and vibrant Mayfair. 

The Mayfair Coordinator reports directly to SOMOS Mayfair’s Community Organizing & Policy Manager. The Coordinator will be charged with the recruitment of community leaders and provide training and skill building in community organizing, political strategy, storytelling and action and leadership development to advance community centered solutions. The coordinator will work with local City and County officials, partners and key stakeholders to bring lasting change in our communities across Mayfair and East San Jose. The Coordinator will prioritize working with the community to develop leadership, educate the community, and mobilize groups of people towards action to successfully complete campaign goals. 

Ideal Candidate Qualifications and Qualities 

  • Deep passion and commitment to advancing racial, economic and social justice in immigrant, working class and multi-generational communities 
  • Successful candidates will have significant experience in, and an ability to demonstrate a deep understanding of Universidad Popular de Mayfair (UPM) and SOMOS Mayfair’s Leadership Development Model, within 90 days of their employment. 
  • Community organizing, community leadership development and community power building experience 
  • Expertise in outreach, turn out, public presentations and group facilitation
  • Highly motivated, time management skills, team player, and eager to learn 

Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Experience leading youth organizing efforts and/or educational advocacy
  • Deep understanding of root causes impacting youth in marginalized and poor communities 
  • Community organizer, with knowledge of coalition building and political advocacy
  • Experience running campaigns using popular education, storytelling, media campaigns and digital organizing 
  • Available to work flexible hours, including afternoons and occasional evenings and weekends 
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Valid California driver’s license and proof of auto insurance required 

Duties and Responsibilities (approximate % of time) 

Community Organizing & Power Building (60%) 

  • Support the Jovenes Activos and EMPUJE team to develop strong action-based programming that includes developing robust outreach strategies to build a powerful base; developing popular education spaces for learning around root cause analysis, grassroots organizing and political strategy 
  • Centering community, develop concrete strategies, tactics and policies to advance the overall goals and priorities of the Organizing Department 
  • Mentor community leaders to identify their strengths, develop skills and become empowered as active leaders in the community 
  • Support and supervise Program Assistants as needed 
  • Supervise external contracts to support the delivery of organizing and leadership development as needed 

External Relationships & Regional Advocacy (15%) 

  • Establish productive working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, organizations, institutional decision makers and agencies to ensure and promote the long- term organizational mission and goals; 
  • Represent SOMOS Mayfair at meetings with external stakeholders and allies
  • Participate in regional and statewide efforts to advance the efforts of Promotores and community organizers working in neighborhoods like Mayfair 
  • Organize community and stakeholder analysis to uphold and reconcile different interests impacted by ongoing organizing activities, tactics, and goals 
  • Support with external and regional campaign endorsements as needed 

Impact Evaluation (10%) 

  • Support in SOMOS Mayfair’s mid-year and annual evaluations 
  • Ensure program evaluation tools are correctly utilized to measure impact with group participants 
  • Conduct strategic evaluation of program areas with support Program Manager
  • Conduct strategic planning with leaders in the program area as well as collectively in a team to ensure program effectiveness, deep and sustainable impact and continuous growth 

Organizational Alignment (10%) 

  • Engage in advocacy and organizing and integrate campaign priorities into Jovenes Activos and EMPUJE program 
  • Move families to collective action 
  • Connect leaders to our Family Resource Centers 
  • Conduct assessments and intake forms to support families to meet their needs
  • Implement leadership development model within Jovenes Activos and EMPUJE program
  • Connect families to ongoing learning opportunities and SOMOS Collective spaces 
  • Coordinate closely with Learning and Leadership Development and Alternative Community Strengthening departments to support strategic alignment of planning, evaluation, implementation across our organization to uphold our model 
  • Always uphold our full SOMOS model. Support families and partners to understand this way of working by modeling our integrated approach 
  • Seek out opportunities to collaborate to across SOMOS departments and build relationships 

Administrative (5%) 

  • Create and execute an annual work plan, that includes organizational strategies and milestone deadlines 
  • Execute a Learning & Professional Development Plan to develop or strengthen essential skills and seek opportunities for greater and on-going learning, including community organizing models and the practice of popular education pedagogy 
  • Participate in agency wide decision-making arenas and in regular internal political education as needed 
  • Contribute to the development of organizational world-view and development of strategic plan 
  • Participate in SOMOS Mayfair staff meetings and training and support major organizational campaigns and projects
