Overview
The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”). The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it. The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (“AZA”). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.

SUMMARY: Responsible for the growth, sales and maintenance of the Zoo’s family and individual membership programs including direct sales acquisition and renewal. Oversees sales team and support staff and coordinates data entry and analysis of the overall program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Develops and manages family and individual membership sales (under $1,000), by direct acquisition, renewals, or other opportunities.
- Helps to create and monitor an annual budget of revenue and expenses associated with membership sales.
- Develop compelling programs to increase membership and member retention.
- Manages data resources, includes providing data and metric analysis. Evaluates and interprets outreach and retention methodologies. Develops direct mail solicitation campaigns including creative development, copywriting and analysis.
- Manages periodic telemarketing and/or surveys to lapsed membership.
- Manages list exchange program with similar institutions.
- Manages opportunities with group sales.
- Supervises creative development and maintains inventory of collateral materials for department.
- Collaborates with other departments to represent Membership at Zoo events and programs.
- Contributor to Zoo publications regarding Membership activities, content manager for membership information on Zoo’s website.
- Works with Development, Education and other Divisions on membership matrices, data science research and other supporting membership & programmatic analyses.
- Supervises staff.
- Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum 2 years’ of work experience in sales or membership-based institution or non-profit. Minimum 2 years supervisory experience with a proven ability to plan, organize and direct work programs and supervise staff. Knowledge of strategic initiatives, including experience in beta-testing various outreach and retention methodologies. Experience with CRM and Point of Sales (POS) software strongly preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from members, the community and/or donors. Ability to communicate the Zoo’s mission and relay information about the membership program to Zoo’s senior management team.
