The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”). The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it. The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. JOB SUMMARY:   Under general supervision, mainly responsible for evaluating, planning, implementing, replacing, troubleshooting, and integrating the Zoo’s Volunteer and Summer Camp software and applications. Serves as assistant technical advisor & systems integrator to all Divisions and reports to Vice President of Information & Technology or designee on technical matters.  Additionally, this position will work closely on an as-needed basis with the Human Resources Division and the Office of the Executive Director/CEO on updating software, databases, etc. to comply with established standards and other compliance & related matters.  This is an exempt, confidential position which requires a high level of discretion and excellent professional & independent judgment. The duties n may include, but are not limited to, providing general oversight of the legacy systems, managing protocols and processes of data entry as it relates to reports and queries. This position will be responsible for maintaining systems such as  Camp & Class Manager, File Maker Pro, Better Impact Office 365 reports and query databases. This position will also require user support as needed. Performs other related duties as required. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.   Evaluates Zoo’s legacy programs, databases, applications and devises and makes recommendations for consolidation or enhancements to reduce costs and/or to increase work flow and efficiency.  

2.   Implements, directs and maintains legacy and new systems to ensure accuracy and to stay current on established guidelines, mandates or requirements.  

3.   Oversees various systems and databases used in the Education including Volunteers/Docents, and works with internal and external stakeholders to recommend best practices with these systems to ensure compliance with AZA diversity/ inclusion standards, as well as other initiatives.

4.   Coordinates and implements procedures related to data maintenance with the IT Department.

5.    Develops reports and customized presentations upon requests.

6.   May perform systems integration or enhancements for interoperability over dissimilar systems, programs and technologies. Ensures systems security and provides support and advice to end users. .

7.   Perform a variety of other related special projects as directed.

8.   Interacts with Zoo visitors courteously and offers proper attention at all times.

9.   Verify outdated data and make any necessary changes to records.

10. Perform regular database backups to secure data and review data for deficiencies or errors.

11. Performs other duties as required

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Knowledge: Excellent computer skills and working knowledge of SQL structures, MS Office 365 and various applications. Knowledge of database structure, design and theories. Ability to analyze, interpret and organize large amounts of data. Experience with multiple database systems, such as Camp & Class Manager, File Maker Pro and/or Better Impact is preferred. 

ANALYTICAL/INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Self-starter, ability to work with little or no supervision. Ability to lead, guide, and manage others. Ability to take on special projects on an as needed basis. Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills. Attention to detail as well as the ability to see the big picture as a manager is a must.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) in data science, data management, computer science or a related field of study from an accredited four-year college or university; or an Associate’s degree (A.A.) with verifiable professional work experience in data management or related. Experience in managing staff in a medium-sized or non-profit organization is preferred. A general IT/tech or database management certification is a plus, such as Microsoft SQL Server, or Database Administration Certification.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
