POSITION SUMMARY

MediaJustice (“MJ”) is seeking its first Development Associate to support MJ’s expanding two-person Development department during a period of growth for the team and organization.

The Development Associate is the primary staff person focused on assisting the team with day-to-day fundraising, Development, and Development communications activities. This role reports to the Director of Development. The Associate works closely with the Development Manager, external grant writer, Communications department, other MediaJustice teams, and project-based consultants to build, track, and sustain relationships with MJ’s constituents – especially subscribers, major and individual donors, and institutional funders – to achieve development goals.

The Development Associate role is ideal for a strong problem-solver and detail-oriented individual with stellar organizational, project management, and verbal and written communication skills acquired from development and development communications experience. They are creative, love improving processes, and bring their best tried-and-true practices while constantly learning and improving. An excellent fit for this role would be someone with a knack for graphic design, proficiency in Salesforce, and an eagerness to think dynamically about how to engage donors in an anti-racist, anti-capitalist context. They can collaborate productively within a team environment and with minimal supervision. Familiarity with the media justice movement is not required, but this position would be optimal for someone interested in the role of technology, social media, and surveillance in racial justice work.

WHO WE ARE

MediaJustice (formerly the Center for Media Justice) is a national media justice organizing and training collaborative led by and for underrepresented communities and home to our signature project, the MediaJustice Network. MediaJustice has boldly advanced communication rights, access, and power for communities harmed by persistent dehumanization, discrimination, and disadvantage for over ten years. We envision a future where everyone has sustained and universal access to open and democratic media and technology platforms, a future in which we are all connected, represented, and free.

The Development Team is responsible for deepening and expanding the solid foundation of financial support for the organization for years to come. Development is more than fundraising. Development is a long-term process based on a commonality of interest and well-established relationships. Nobody in Development works alone – it’s a team sport. We aim to transform people new to MediaJustice and the issues we work across into informed supporters. We use data and experience to plan. We set goals. We execute. We refine. We seek improvement. We’re willing to test new ideas. We believe in movement work and fundraising principles grounded in equity and social justice. We recognize that much philanthropic and individual supporter wealth originates from the same mechanisms that caused the problems their support is meant to fix.

It includes proactively anticipating roadblocks in our work and strategizing with your colleagues about how you will respond in these situations.
  • Ability to get things done: You don’t confuse motion with results. You are driven by a desire to make progress and help others. You figure out how things work and how to resolve the challenges.
  • Creativity: You’re able to recognize opportunity, see possibilities, connect the dots, and bring together ideas, resources, and people without ignoring the body of knowledge that exists about fundraising and Development.
  • Collaboration: Collaboration at MediaJustice is about thoughtfully and strategically involving others in achieving our goals. This includes proactively sharing information, seeking input and alignment, considering your and the team’s/others’ goals, and engaging impacted team members as we seek to make decisions and achieve our mission.
  • Communication Skills: You can deliver clear and concise verbal and written messages that facilitate mutual understanding. Whether writing an email, presenting at a meeting, collaborating with another team member, or speaking with a donor, you can adapt the message to suit the audience. You’re a good listener. When you write professionally, you write well. While this means correct spelling, good grammar, and avoiding jargon, it also means writing with heart, style, and the right tone to fit the organization you’re writing for and its audience. You proofread your work before sending it. You can present information with a reasonable degree of confidence. You’re also able to step away from the keyboard. While email and Slack are prominent communication tools at MediaJustice, when a topic is complex or sensitive, you can assess that and have a quick real-time conversation instead of a series of emails.
  • Detail-oriented: You pay close attention and notice minor details. You’re able to catch mistakes before they snowball into a bigger problem.
  • JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion): Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at MediaJustice is the awareness of not just systems of privilege but also how power is codified in systems of oppression and how this often extends to our interactions with people, AND a collaborative practice and commitment to action that supports all of us to challenge and dismantle systems of privilege and oppression, continue our learning and growth and create a workplace environment that lets all of us feel as though we belong here.
  • Organization and Project Management: You think systematically about things and arrange everything accordingly. You keep track of the things you need to get done and when you need to get them done. You know where things need to go and have a plan for what they need to do. You have the competencies and traits required to effectively coordinate a project from start to finish, such as good communication, interpersonal skills, motivational skills, and organization.
  • Problem Solving: You make decisions and resolve issues using critical thinking and analytical skills. You identify problems, focus on solutions, and analyze as many outcomes as possible. You consider all the factors you can in a situation and decide based on the best solution.
