Overview

Position Summary: 

Reporting to the Executive Director, Membership Fundraising & Donor Relations, the Director of Donor Relations is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the overall cultivation and stewardship of KQED’s constituencies through excellent customer service, special engagement opportunities, publications, ad hoc and regular communications and reporting, and events, in order to inspire and steward philanthropic support for KQED’s mission.

The Director will lead and contribute regularly to cross-functional teams and engage with senior leadership, and directors of Development, Audience Development, Audience Intelligence, Marketing and Communications, Content, Programming, Product, and IT teams. The Director will manage a team of fourteen, including three direct reports, set standards and provide support for their continuous growth and the growth of the full team.

KQED provide citizens of Northern California with a community-supported alternative to commercial media.   We provide citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions; convene community dialogue; bring the arts to everyone and engage audiences to share their stories. We help students and teachers thrive in 21st-century classrooms, and take people of all ages on journeys of exploration- exposing them to new people, places and ideas.

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED’s newly renovated headquarters and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Essential Functions:

  1. Develop, implement and manage annual cultivation and stewardship plans as part of an overarching lifetime strategy for KQED’s donors.
  2. Oversee Membership Operations activities, such as customer service, acknowledgement letters and member card mailing. Supervise and partner with Senior Manager to ensure success of customer service representatives.
  3. Supervise and collaborate with Stewardship Program Specialist to ensure successful activities with all members, with a particular focus on sustaining members and Leadership Circle Ambassador members.
  4. Partner with Associate Director of Direct Response to further develop a comprehensive monthly sustainer program that increases retention, gift amount and donor satisfaction.
  5. Coordinate with various departments to develop and produce key donor relations deliverables, including written (hard copy, email or online content), video, or events, with a particular focus on impact reports.
  6. Partner with fundraising team to manage workplace and corporate giving program including targeted communications, outreach and occasional in-person meetings, with a focus on maximizing donors’ contributions.
  7. Work with various departments to communicate donor relations plans, educate them about the importance of donor relations, and partner with them to make sure they and their work is appropriately represented to donors
  8. Assess donor relations opportunities and track donor relations trends. Recommend improvements based on findings
  9. Supervise and collaborate with Volunteer Manager to execute successful on air fundraising volunteer opportunities, and well as provide volunteer support throughout the organization.
  10. Promote and/or collaborate with staff who manage the Community Advisory Panel(CAP), Youth Advisory Board (YAB) and volunteer programs to ensure KQED provides targeted opportunities for individuals, organizations and corporate employee groups to engage directly with KQED’s programs and mission

Knowledge/Experience Required:

  1. Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience
  2. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills: tact, self-confidence, diplomacy, teamwork, good judgement, confidentiality, a sense of humor, and excellent strategic planning skills
  3. Curiosity, imagination, and a genuine interest in the future of public media
  4. Minimum three years professional writing experience, with an eye for creativity and great attention to detail
  5. Strong knowledge of fundraising, operations and all aspects of donor relations with deep understanding of concepts and best practices
  6. Ability to articulate progress and impact in a way that is understandable and meaningful to various stakeholders
  7. Advanced oral and written communication skills, including comfort with public speaking and the ability to write and edit letters and reports
  8. Proficient in MS Office Suite, Google docs and web based relational databases (e.g. Salesforce, EveryAction, Tessitura, ROI Solutions, etc.)
  9. Willingness and ability to work flexible work schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends

Knowledge/Experience Desired:

Experience within public media is not required.
