Overview

Job Summary: The Staff Attorney

will play a key role in supporting formerly incarcerated and previously

gang-involved individuals in navigating legal obstacles, particularly in the

realms of family law and government benefits. 

The Staff Attorney would report to the Supervising Attorney and Director

of Legal Services.

Essential Duties:

Provide direct representation in family law and government benefit

cases before the California Superior Courts, including but not limited to:

Divorce, Parentage, Child Support, Protective Orders, Guardianship, Social

Security Appeals, and Resource Family Appeals.    

Provide legal services in a community org environment to members of

the public.   

Counsel and advise clients

on their legal rights, prepare court forms and documents, draft declarations,

and conduct legal research and writing including memorandums and points and

authorities.

Collaborate with various

agencies to provide client support (not direct representation) in juvenile

dependency and other criminal matters.   

Supervise interns, volunteers, and legal assistants.

Education and or Experience:

Admission to the California bar  

1-2 years experience with family law and/or government benefits,

preferably in a not-for-profit setting.   

A strong alignment with the Homeboy Industries mission, a passion for

social justice, and a commitment to trauma-informed care. 

A strong belief in the capacity for individuals to transform

Excellent written and oral communication skills, excellent project

management skills.       

A high level of independence, initiative, creativity, flexibility, and

good judgment.  

Courtroom experience a plus
