FLSA: Non-exempt

HOURS: 25 hours a week; Flexibility and availability to work some late evenings and/or weekends

SALARY: $18 per hour for a maximum of 25 hours a week

START DATE: ASAP

POSITION SUMMARY

HOLA is looking for a Bridges Academic Advisor who will be responsible for supporting the Bridges Program Director and Coordinator in overseeing, planning for and reporting on all Bridges programming. This includes curriculum planning and oversight, creation and coordination of tutoring & academic programming, and providing additional educational support to all students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collect, review and report on programmatic spreadsheets student grades throughout the academic year (progress and final report cards).
  • Communicate academic student progress with parents and help with communication between families and youth.
  • Assist students in developing an academic plan based on the completion of A-G requirements as well as maintaining passing grades.
  • Oversee extended tutoring for students with low academic performance.
  • Attend and support parents in IEP meetings.
  • Work directly with the Program Director to accomplish the goals of the Bridges program.
  • Create and foster a positive academic/career enriching environment for all youth (grades 6th-10th).
  • Support HOLA in all areas of after school programming and outside volunteer work.
  • Guide students in determining their interests and abilities using a wide range of methods, such as aptitude assessments, mock interviews and planning materials.
  • Drive and /or chaperone on various field trips (Driving will include, but not limited to, a 10-passenger van).
  • Communicate academic student progress with parents and help with communication between families and youth.
  • Facilitate one-on-one meetings with parents as needed.
  • Develop and implement academic assignments for students with low academic performance in order to enhance their learning and interest in the subject.
  • Assist with the coordination of volunteers and supervision.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with academic tutors and volunteers regarding specific concerns and needs of students.
  • Gain and maintain knowledge of current educational issues/trends.
  • Flexibility and availability to work some late evenings and /or weekends.
  • Help with photocopies, collecting and sorting material, phone calls and preparing for class meetings.
  • Implement various age appropriate activities for youth, grades 6th – 10th.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS)

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Experience working with middle and high school youth.
  • Strong and effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable with taking accountability for job duties and being solutions-oriented.
  • Experienced in prioritizing and multitasking in a busy work environment.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude in high paced moments. 
  • A strong desire to interface with youth.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • A collaborative team-working style with ability to relate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Acts ethically, responsibly and with utmost integrity.
  • The highest standards of conduct and comportment; the ability to be a strong role model for youth during all working hours; treat employees, donors, staff and youth with respect
  • Proficient with Google Workspace, office equipment, and conducting internet research.
  • Successfully pass a LiveScan background check after receiving an offer of employment.

VACCINATION POLICY

Heart of Los Angeles requires its employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to certain exemptions as required by law. New hires working at Heart of Los Angeles must be fully vaccinated no later than 60 days after hire and submit to additional masking and social distancing requirements. Employees must also receive the COVID-booster shot within 10 days after becoming eligible for it. Please contact HOLA’s Human Resources Department for a copy of the vaccination policy.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The building environment does not provide air conditioning and heat in all areas. Outdoor work is expected in some cases.
