Overview

Under the general supervision of the Executive Director, the Executive of Community Impact provides equity-centered leadership, direction, and support in building and maintaining relationships with key local, regional, and statewide government representatives, community-based organizations, and philanthropic institutions to create synergistic and sustainable partnerships that benefit the healthy development of young children.

In addition, the Executive of Community Impact centers the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in collaboration with FIRST 5 leadership, staff, and community stakeholders to inform equitable measurement, analysis, and evaluation of programmatic, fiscal, and communications efforts, ensuring alignment across agency strategic goals.

Key Responsibilities

Public Policy and Government Relations

  • In partnership with FIRST 5 leadership and staff, develop and maintain strong relationships with legislators, legislative staff, and leaders of local, regional, and statewide professional associations.
  • Together with agency leadership, staff, and community partners, identify, lead and coordinate strategic policy and advocacy efforts through an integrated focus on local, regional, and statewide priorities aligned with the vision and mission of FIRST 5.

 

Donor Relations and Grant Cultivation

  • Strengthen and expand FIRST 5’s network of government and philanthropic investments to support agency strategic goals that are not fully funded through First 5 California resources.
  • Collaborate with FIRST 5 leadership, staff, and community partners to determine equitable and strategic grant opportunities, manage donor relations, and provide guidance and support to staff in the development and monitoring of grant applications and other third-party funding opportunities.
  • Seek new and expanded grant opportunities from government and philanthropic institutions to maintain and expand FIRST 5 funding portfolio.

 

Evaluation, Community Engagement, and Communication of Community Impact

  • In collaboration with FIRST 5 leadership, staff, and community stakeholders, lead development and implementation of a community impact evaluation plan for the agency, prioritizing equitable measurement and analysis of programmatic, fiscal, and communications efforts aligned with agency strategic goals.
  • Support a spectrum of community engagement opportunities that inform and influence FIRST 5 programs and investments.
  • Synthesize information and present cohesive, collaborative, strategic, and equity-oriented presentations to FIRST 5 Commissioners, grantors, government leaders, and other key external partners.
  • Develop and implement an external communications plan that prioritizes and promotes key policy, programmatic, and fiscal impacts of the work of FIRST 5.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience of equity principles and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusive practices.
  • Experience in advocacy and systems change work.
  • Experience and/or willingness to work collaboratively in a union environment.
  • Ability to flexibly manage priorities and projects across integrated, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Team-oriented, with capacity to build effective collegial relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Ability to listen and interact effectively and sensitively with diverse colleagues and community partners from varied cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to follow and inform FIRST 5 policies and procedures.
  • Ability to adhere to and maintain strict confidentiality standards.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, including Teams, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and SharePoint. Willingness and capacity to learn new online platforms a plus.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in providing policy, advocacy, evaluation, communications, and/or systems-change work in a nonprofit, public entity, or community-based organization.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ supervisory experience.

Term

This is a full-time, exempt position, 40 hours per week. Some nights and weekends may be required. Travel is less than 10%, and may include required travel to conferences, meetings and other FIRST 5 events.

This position is a hybrid role, and the incumbent is expected to be on-site a minimum of two (2) days per week in San Jose, CA.
