Summary
The Recycling Education Program Coordinator develops and implements recycling education and diversion programs and assists in the promotion of the Ecology Center’s recycling efforts. The Recycling Education Program Coordinator works directly with the Ecology Center’s customer base via telephone, email, onsite visits, events, and outreach educational programs to identify and educate them on proper recycling techniques to improve the quality of materials received at our Recycling Center. At certain times annually or more often as directed, route audits for contaminated cart inspection duties shall occur. See physical requirements that follow. This full-time position involves both direct field work and in-office hours and may require occasional evening and weekend activities. This position is an on-site position and eligible for hybrid.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts zero waste outreach and education to City of Berkeley single-family residents, small multifamily properties (1-9 units), and special public events.
- Manages the Recycling Education Program serving as lead for all SB 1383 Compliance duties, development and implementation of all programming, activities, and events.
- Helps develop, and leads execution of an annual updated education plan.
- Leads development of integrated print, online, social media, and other educational content and collateral.
- Assist in identifying and implementing computer applications to facilitate route audits in recording and reporting data and findings.
- Conducts field and route audits for contamination within carts in accordance with SB 1383 using computer applications as needed
- Implements field-based customer education outreach for customers in single family and small apartment buildings.
- Leads community engagement and education presence at local public events and farmers markets.
- Works as a team to assist in creating organizational strategy for the municipality and engages City recycling staff in execution of the educational aspects of the contract.

- proves community partnerships by attending and participating in public events, meetings and other programs on behalf of the recycling program.
- Prepares and files various reports for internal and external use, such as recycling education program analysis and field audit contamination reports.
- Conducts on-site audits to determine right sizing for types of services necessary to meet the needs of customers.
- Manage annual budget and timelines related to primary areas of responsibility.
- Works closely with the Recycling Program, Education and Engagement Program and Development and Communications staff to maintain a strong, cordial, and productive team that fulfills program goals.
- Provides customer facility tours on an as needed basis.
- Observe safe operating practices and comply with organizational safety policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated program management experience.
- Strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills and experience.
- Demonstrated experience working on regulatory compliance and/or reporting.
- Demonstrated experience in public speaking directly related to the area of assignment.
- Prior work experience showing strong ability to manage and complete various tasks and assignments thoroughly, on time, and within budget.
- Principles, and methods of effective customer service relations including identifying customer needs and issues while identifying and implementing appropriate solutions.
- Experience working with local and/or state government agencies.
- Ability to work well with a range of computer applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Google Suite).
- Efficient and well organized; able to report information in a timely manner and manage a budget.
- Ability to lead and oversee content development and digital media communications.
- Demonstrated experience with group facilitation and event planning to attract and serve diverse audiences.
- Excellent presentation skills in both verbal and written formats; experience in public speaking and conducting outreach to diverse audiences.
- Experience working in a collaborative community setting.
- Proven ability to work independently and exercise good judgment in a variety of environments and situations.
- Ability and desire to quickly acquire a deep understanding of the Ecology Center’s overall mission and values and consistently demonstrate support of the organization’s strategic goals.
- Promotes a positive organizational image by maintaining an active role in the communities served.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree, and two years of related work experience in program management, source reduction, recycling, composting, sustainability, climate action, or environmental education, with increasing levels of responsibility, or,
- High School Diploma/GED and four years of experience in program management, source reduction, recycling, composting, sustainability, climate action, or environmental education, with increasing levels of responsibility
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid CA driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Alternately, be able to readily access and use public transportation or other means in order to travel from site to site

- Experience regular exposure to dust, offensive odors, noise, inclement weather and strong vibrations resulting from equipment during recycling cart audits, recycling collection operations, industrial facility yard(s) and surrounding industries’ operations.
