DIY Girls is a non-profit organization hosting after-school STEM programs with a mission to increase girls’ and gender-expansive youth’s interest and long-term success in technology, engineering, and making through innovative educational experiences and mentor relationships.

STEM Program Co-Instructors serve as near-peer mentors and role models at DIY Girls. They receive training to engage elementary and middle school participants in creative projects that develop their technical and problem-solving skills. This is a great opportunity to gain real-life, classroom teaching experience. This position reports to the Sr. Programs Coordinator.

Multiple positions available

Hours: Part-time/Non-Exempt, up to 20 hours per week

Location: Schools in the Northeast San Fernando Valley (San Fernando, Pacoima, Sylmar)

Availability:

  • Monday – Friday, after-school
  • Fall 2025 & Spring 2026

Responsibilities:

  • Co-lead lessons & enrichment activities for 24-30 students in the DIY Girls after-school program
  • Review lessons and agenda with Co-Instructor weekly, and update as needed
  • Deliver an engaging curriculum centered around creative problem solving and making
  • Guide & support students through the creation and troubleshooting of their hands-on projects
  • Cultivate a fun & safe environment that promotes social emotional learning and respect among diverse learners
  • Establish a classroom environment where students are encouraged to take risks and contribute their ideas
  • Maintain hardware and equipment to ensure tools are set up safely and appropriately
  • Classroom Set Up & Clean Up
  • Enter attendance daily and call home for absent students
  • Disseminate important program reminders and updates to students and parents
  • Provide daily summary detailing program progress, student participation, and notable situations
  • Prepare program materials (student kits and program bins)
  • Other duties as assigned, with a primary focus on program instruction and student project development

Qualifications:

  • Experience in Education and working with youth
  • Excellent organization skills, consistency, and reliability
  • Interest in education, technology, engineering, and hands-on DIY projects
  • Solutions-oriented, self-starter
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to model personal responsibility, a strong work ethic, and positive character

Preferred:

  • STEM or Education major
  • Fluent in Spanish

Physical requirements:

  • Must be able to lift, push, or pull up to 20 pounds at times
