SUMMARY

The California Science Center Foundation is expanding our fund development team with a Prospect Research Analyst to support the identification and qualification of prospective individual, corporate and foundation donors. They will prepare detailed profiles, briefings and reports that will advance external relationships in alignment with our strategic development plan, and support portfolio assignments for staff across giving initiatives.

The ideal candidate has 2+ years experience in nonprofit development, including researching and assessing a prospective donor’s capacity and propensity to give, and affinity for a nonprofit organization’s mission and programs. They will be familiar with free and paid prospect research and wealth screening tools and have experience working within a constituent relationship management (CRM) database. The Prospect Research Analyst will be part of a transformational period of growth as the California Science Center works toward the completion of the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center expansion, featuring space shuttle Endeavour.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree desired, or equivalent work experience.
  • 2+ years nonprofit development experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of prospect research tools and techniques.
  • Ability to evaluate and verify the accuracy of information and sources.
  • Familiarity with relational database software and data-mining concepts and techniques.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills; detail oriented.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
  • Excellent follow-through and ability to balance multiple projects and priorities to meet personal deadlines.
  • Capable of working efficiently and quickly to respond to unanticipated requests when required.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to strategize, set and meet goals.
  • Knowledge of Los Angeles area philanthropic communities desired.
  • Experience with iWave, Candid/Foundation Directory and/or Tessitura a plus.
  • Adherence to current expectation to work a minimum three days in the office per week, with the flexibility to work additional days on-site as needed to advance projects and priorities.
  • Ability to work a 40-hour week required; willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends on occasion.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct prospect research, assist in the identification of prospects, and prepare research profiles as requested on identified prospects to support fundraising and donor engagement strategies.
  • Prepare confidential profiles on prospective donors, including individuals, foundations, and corporations for use by senior staff and development team.
  • Update and maintain donor profiles and database records, including biographical, financial, and philanthropic information.
  • Utilize and employ electronic donor prospect screening services.
  • Independently and proactively identify new donor prospects.
  • Undertake financial analysis of donor and prospect wealth.
  • Safeguard the confidentiality of donor information and maintain appropriate recording and use of information in the constituent database and supporting systems.
  • Participate in and contribute to the formulation of policies related to the processes and procedures of prospect management and related infrastructure support activities.
  • Special projects, assignments and other duties as assigned.
