The Burn Institute mission is to educate and inspire communities to reduce burn injuries and empower those affected by burn trauma. As a team, we bridge the efforts between fire and burn prevention awareness in our community and support services for burn survivors. About this Position

The Burn Institute is seeking a motivated and energetic individual who wants to lead supportive colleagues doing fulfilling work for San Diego and Imperial Counties.

The Executive Director assumes overall responsibility for all fundraising, program operations, development and implementation, public and media relations, fiscal matters, personnel management, and overall organizational governance.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management

  • Programmatic Excellence: Ensure ongoing excellence in program quality, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Systems Quality: Ensure effective systems to track organizational progress towards goals and evaluate relevant program components for reporting purposes to key stakeholders.
  • Financial Management: Oversee financial planning, budgeting and reporting. In collaboration with staff and Finance Committee, prepare and administer annual budget, adjusting spending to reflect revenue realities.
  • Staff Engagement: Lead, coach, develop and retain Burn Institute’s high performing team, maintaining a culture of excellence and accountability and ensuring a diverse staff that represents the community we serve.
  • Board Relations: Develop, maintain, inform, and support a strong Board of Directors. Provide direction and assistance to Board and Board Committees when needed.
  • Volunteer Engagement: Actively engage high-level volunteers (e.g. board members, fundraisers, committee members, etc.) to achieve strategic operational goals.
  • Strategic Planning: Partner with Board and staff to develop strategic priorities and establish annual goals and action steps to ensure they are achieved.

Development and Communications

  • Resource Development: Ensure the creation and implementation of a resource development plan to meet Burn Institute’s fundraising goals.
  • Communications: Ensure a strong reputation and brand for Burn Institute in the local community and with audiences that are key to the achievement of the mission.
  • Key Relationship Development: In partnership with the Board, leverage external presence and relationships to attract new opportunities to the organization. Build partnerships in new markets, developing relationships with funders and political and community leaders who may be catalytic to Burn Institute’s growth.
