Job Opening:   Payroll Specialist  

Reports To:      Vice President of Fiscal Services

Status:               Exempt, Full Time

Main Function: The primary responsibility of the Payroll Specialist is to process payroll and to ensure compliance with payroll policies and state laws.

Qualifications/Requirements:

·       3-5 years of payroll processing experience required. Bright Star has 500+ employees. Your experience should be with organizations where you have processed payroll for at least 300+ employees

  • Must reside within 50 miles of Los Angeles, CA

·       Advanced Excel skills needed. This position will require managing large amounts of data. The ability to manipulate the information and create necessary formulas on excel is essential

·       Knowledge of relevant laws and polices relating to labor law compliance

·       Strong customer service orientation including responding to needs in a timely manner

·       Detail oriented, efficient and accurate

·       Ability to multi-task while understanding the competing priorities

·       Non-profit and charter school experience preferred

·       MIP experience preferred but not required

·       Degree/certification in accounting/payroll desired

·       Proficiency in Paycom payroll system highly preferred

·       CalSTRS reporting experience highly preferred

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to the following):

·       Work with the VP of Fiscal Services to streamline current payroll processes

·       Process payroll and ensure all payroll deadlines are met and paychecks are processed on time

·       Manage the time reporting system

·       Stay up-to-date on the changes in the payroll system

·       Support and work with the HR department with implementing HR policies and California labor laws

·       Work with schools and other departments to ensure compliance with payroll policies and procedures

·       Prepare and submit STRS payments and reports in a timely manner

·       Prepare and submit unemployment payment and reports to EDD in a timely manner

·       Prepare and submit 403B payment and reports

·       Prepare and post payroll and benefits records to the accounting software according to school budgets, company policy and grant award compliance

·       Maintain all payroll records for audit compliance

·       Assist in other accounting duties as needed

Salary and Benefits:

Salary:               $65,000 – $70,000 – Commensurate with Experience

Status:               Exempt, Full Time 

Location:           Remote 90%, travel to sites/office as needed
