The College Preparatory School-School Counselor Position

The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a full-time School Counselor for the 2022-23 school year. The School Counselor promotes and supports the mental and physical health of the student community and advises parents and faculty on the emotional aspects of individual students and adolescent development. Candidates should be eager to work with students, families, and colleagues in a rich academic environment that highly values equity and inclusion. The School Counselor reports to the Dean of Students and works closely with other administrative leaders.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide counseling (problem-solving, crisis intervention, emotional support) for students and groups contending with varied psychosocial stressors
  • Provide outside therapy referrals to students and parents when comprehensive therapy services are indicated.
  • Serve as a case manager for students in crisis or facing more significant mental health issues; coordinate care with outside providers and within the school community.
  • Serve as a member of the Student Support Team.
  • Support and advise on Compass Program curricula that address SEL and mental health topics. (The Compass Program is a developmental course sequence built around topics that include equity and inclusion, social justice, sexual health, mental health, and drug education.)
  • Work consultatively with faculty members on strategies to support students struggling with various emotional challenges and mental health issues
  • Organize and facilitate student and parent workshops regarding student mental health throughout the year.
  • Attend and co-facilitate several class-wide overnight retreats throughout the school year.
  • Work with the Health and Wellness Educator in support of the 12-grade Peer Health Initiative Resource Educators (PHIRE)
  • Serve as faculty advisor and mentor to mental health-related clubs

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in social work, school counseling, or clinical psychology
  • Minimum of three years of school-based counseling experience in a high school or similar setting
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated cultural competence working with students and families from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences.
  • Empathy, curiosity, warmth, and a deep understanding of adolescent cognitive and social development
